Magraj ji Jain from SURE Barmer: tenacious commitment to improving lives in Thar



Mr. Magraj Khangarmal Jain was born on 27 February, 1930 in Shiv, a village in interiors of Barmer, a desert district in Rajasthan bordering Pakistan.

Remarkable rustic man gifted with an ability to inspire people for meaningful rural reconstruction by combining traditional wisdom and modern knowledge to facilitate sustainable living in the fragile ecology of Thar.





His life journey epitomizes the vital need for sustaining a balance between frugal yet benign and celebratory existence that all rustic traditions of desert life teach us and ceaselessly strive with a tenacious commitment to bring the benefits of modernity for poor and ordinary villagers. 

Padamshree Magraj ji's vision continues to be carried on by a dedicated team of Society to Uplift Rural Economy, (SURE), an organisation he founded in 1992.

We had lost a luminary who inspired many, saved and promoted the Tharparkar breed of cattle. He is live in hearts and remembered to this day - we cherish memories of his presence around, discussions and lessons on strengthening the local livelihoods with local solutions. What a devotion!
